Jan Bonny

Jan Bonny is a highly awarded writer and director whose work ranges across feature film, series, experimental film, theatre and advertising. His graduation film Gegenüber premiered in 2007 at the Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight. It won Best Screenplay at the Munich Film Festival and was nominated for the European Discovery Award at the European Film Awards. Bonny is an alumnus of both the Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam and the Torino Filmlab.

In 2018 he presented Wintermärchen, a radical portrait of a three person terror cell, in the international competition of the Locarno Film Festival. The film screened worldwide and received seven nominations and three awards from the German Film Critics Awards in 2020 including Best Film. The short film Muss ja nicht sein, dass es heute ist, which he co wrote, premiered in the German Competition in Oberhausen in 2022 and won the German Short Film Award as well as the German Film Critics Award in 2023.

Bonny’s streaming and tv work stays close to his distinctive style. His productions include Über Barbarossaplatz for WDR. He received the Grimme Award for Wir wären andere Menschen in 2021 and the German Television Award in 2023 for the Netflix series King of Stonks. His work for BMW Nextgen with Christoph Waltz and Arnold Schwarzenegger was honored with the ADC Award and the Montreux Gold Award in 2022. He has directed more than one hundred commercials for agencies such as Jung von Matt, DDB, Ogilvy, Droga5 and BBDO for clients such as Audi, BMW, Coke and ING.

His long standing collaboration with artist Alex Wissel has produced several experimental hybrid works that bridge visual art, theatre and film. These include Single, Rheingold in co production with Volksbühne Berlin, Freiheit ist das Einzigste, was zählt for ZDF and H A M K B H Was ist schlimmer als verlieren. These works have been shown at institutions such as mumok Vienna, Haus der Kunst Munich, Museum Abteiberg, the Kestnergesellschaft and the Julia Stoschek Collection. In 2021 Bonny directed Heiner Müller’s Philoktet at Theater Basel.

In 2024 Der Panther, produced by Paramount+ as part of the anthology series Zeit Verbrechen and starring Lars Eidinger, premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival. The film received multiple awards and was nominated for the German Television Award 2025. In 2025 Bonny wrote and directed Eisenfaust, a contemporary adaptation of Goethe’s Götz von Berlichingen, for the main stage of Schauspiel Köln. Video and stage elements from the production subsequently appeared in exhibitions at the Berliner Ensemble and the Kunstsammlung NRW.

Bonny has published texts in Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Welt and other outlets. He is a member of the German and the European Film Academy.
